Post subject:  EX Brake Caliper Conversion Question
Question: Does the Ex caliper allow for the brake pad to cover the whole surface of the the H1 rotor at its contact point? I have a modified SV650 caliper on my KH500. It does not cover the whole disk at the point of contact. If I remember right, there is still about an 1/8" of rotor that could be used towards the center. I have bad brake fade as well. I'm using a EBC light weight KH500 rotor. If the EX brake caliper covers the whole disk, I would switch to an EX set up. Does anyone make a bracket for an EX caliper on KH500 forks? Thanks in advance!

After looking at the pic of Cody's bike with the modified rotor on it. I'm begining to thing that the Ex caliper doesn't cover more surface are of the rotor because if it did, I'm not sure you would be cutting out the material not used on the rotor to lighten it. Correct me if I'm wrong.

here is my modified rotor with ex cliper you can see the area contacted by the pads
and a considerable area towards the middle is not used.
i would think your fade prob is more of a pad material symptom than area.
ask moo which pads he uses in his race bike i dont think he has issues with fade.

My set up on my S3 with stock S3 front disk looks similar to the picture Mark (two-stroke-brit) posted. In my case the caliper could be more closely fitted to the rotor OD but would require more fab work so I left it as it was. I use EBC HH pads. Great stopping power and no fade with single disk set up.

U are correct it doesn't cover the whole rotor. I can measure the width of the pad if U want, when I get home tonight. EBC "HH" pads is what is recommended.

Don, I'm not home to measure mine. It was just something that has been bugging me. I'm running EBC HH pads as well on my bike. Unfortunately it's the best pad they make for SV650 calipers. They are ok pads, but there are pads out there that are way better. Maybe I just have a set of bad pads. Don, if you want to measure them and keep that number tucked away, that would be cool. Or you could email me the numbers and I'll save the email for when I get home in May to take a look. That would be cool! Thank you!

the ex covers more area where it counts, the outer edge of the rotor. yeah, you got soemthing going on with yours. my S2 has stupidly good working brakes as did the h1 i had w/the ex conversion. i mean, almost TOO good. (and yes i also ride modern bikes so my perception isnt stuck in 1978 :lol: )

Well I could just be used to my SV650 that has a GSXR750 front end on it with a Brembo master cylinder and some insane pads. But I think it could be having to do with the master cylinder I have on the Kawi more than anything. The bike stops ok, but there is no feel in the lever. Feels very dull and I always feel like I'm in the begining of having some brake fade and then I chill out because I get nervous. The MC came off of a CBR600rr. So it is designed for larger brakes and two calipers vs the single sided set up I have now.

That's exactly what happens with too big of a master cylinder....

The thing to remember with brakes, the closer the ratio to 1 to 1, the more force is needed at the lever, or more "wooden feel", as in non power brakes on a car.

That makes a lot of sense! It does feel like manual brakes on a car. Hell, my cable drum brake on my SR500 has more feeling in the lever then my triple does.
