Hey all, I just picked up a 90cc 1972 Kawasaki G3SS. My short term plan was to get it running and see how it did, but of course I've got it in pieces already and am going to go ahead and do the build. I desperately want to know some things before I sink some money into stock parts, though, and info on the web is scant! Engine: Are there any worthwhile cylinder swaps? Ja-Moo rumored a G31M Centurion cylinder would work, but I can't find one anywhere. Carb: It's the kind of carb that's on the side of the case--I've never dealt with this before. Is there anything available for an upgrade? Any way I can run a filter on the bellmouth and get rid of the intake on top of the cases? Suspension: It's soft. Very soft. I'm somewhere between 150-160lbs. Any recommendations? Other: Are there any very common crossreference bikes (while I'm looking for parts)? Anything else anybody could share would be great. I want to get it done ASAP! |

Not sure if it's a drop on though. I bored my 90 to a 100, but the liner cracked. Carb: It's the kind of carb that's on the side of the case--I've never dealt with this before. You have to get creative, you can cut the rotary valve for more duration. And just run a bell mouth or filter. Suspension: It's soft. Very soft. I'm somewhere between 150-160lbs. Any recommendations? Shocks for your weight? Other: Are there any very common crossreference bikes (while I'm looking for parts)? 69 to 73 90 - 100 I think are pretty much the same motor. Anything else anybody could share would be great. I want to get it done ASAP! You might find a pipe if you look long enough. |

When I had my brand new 1969 G3SS Attachment: 38_1.jpg they also offered the "Bushmaster" model which had a high pipe for scrambling. It offered little if any performance improvement. I have my ex's G3SS she owned when we met in 1980 and it is a 1976 model. I plan to restore it too, for my 2 year old grandson. A lot of model specific parts are available from dealers and on evil bay too. Dont bother with any mods for performamce in my opinion. I did them all to my '69 90cc model and it gave it maybe 5% more power. 40 over pistons, rotary valve shaving and rejetting that little carb. I'd stick with the stock air intake and carb set up if it were me. I was 165lbs at the time so the shocks were fine. Like moo said, get some more adequate shocks and leave her stock. JMHO |

You should look for an air cooled kx125 motor to drop into that |

z1 zonely, my daughter Ruby is working on her 75g3ssE to bring to the gap currently. my first m/c was a 71 g3tra 100 which survived being hit by a car and even worse-survived me- until i bought blue when turned 16. maybe some of this might be useful, hope so... your 72g3ss 90 was basically the same visually with the 71 90 as well as 71/2 g3tr 100 .the earlier g3ss used different bodywork and if you need some these 4 models are sweet for donor items. in 71/2 the ss was strictly street, the tr and tra were semitrail ,the g4 was the tough guy dirt bike with dual range tranny etc. depending on what you want to do to yours, visually you could pick up a high pipe from the g3tr's with little else really different or meaningful, just mho. i can tell you that Hooker made a stinger for the g3tr-thus g3ss- that would be cool but i imagine pretty hard to find. i am unsure if i even have one of them anymore as i saved one for yrs hoping to get another orange g3tra,lol. the 90 was 10hp, the bored out 100 only produced 10.5 so the effort to locate and modify ,i dunno? it wasnt worth it then either. a friend had the g390 and we compared/ swapped all the time. the g4 [11hp]is a great bike, maybe more of what you might prefer in a small street/trail. there were several document/articles in the day for eng/suspenion/gearing modding up the g4 as g31s were a little out of reach for most, the g3s at the end recieved attention not so much. lastly, if you stick with, the 75g3ssE was a 100[no biggie] but you will find wider donor rims if desired ,as well as the rotary disc being steel that yr. a kickbutt modern powerplant would be a nice project! good luck! if can help in some way let me know? bigmo |
