I see there's a couple of links on the resource site that give information on rubber mounting later h2 engines. Does anyone know if those same techniques can be applied to a 72? I was thinking of trying the method where you drill out the engine case bosses. i thought the bosses might have changed on later years though and I didn't want to go cracking something

Thanks in advance

Jason

Early H2 cases don't have enough meat to drill out.

Blah on rubber mounting, I'm reminded of a Beach Boys tune "Good Vibrations". My 72 vibration does not bother me a bit.

My later '72 H2 was very smooth, the vibration only became noticeable above 6,500 rpm (so not an issue while cruising). I took the engine out and it was factory shimmed on all lower mounts. Once I installed a different motor (also a '72), the shims would not fit -- in fact the lower through and through mounts had been drilled and heli-coiled to accept mounting bolts rather than rods. Keep in mind this motor had a full professional rebuild including crank; now it vibrates worse than the no-tell motel beds at Niagara Falls. So I think the shimming must play a roll in keeping the vibes down. I tried making shims to fit the gap, but they were just too soft.

My point is, rubber mounting is nice, but a properly tuned, properly installed motor can also be very smooth.

The tall bars and rubber mounting of them help a lot, but on a racer with clip ons, and the revs always around 8+ you hands are goners.

the way to rubber mount a 72 engine is to modify the frame so the rubber mounts are in the frame (leo from Holland has done this)

Rubbermounting makes these bikes a joy to ride.

I'm not cool enough to deal with parts cracking or just plain falling off, numb hands and feet, etc that most of the non-rubbermounted bikes are known for.

Dont get me wrong, Ive ridden a few H2's and early H1's that were pretty smooth, but after rubbermounting...especially on an H2, Ill never go back.

Funny this thread just caught my eye, cause the new Rubbermounts showed up from Volker in Germany today! I just spent the last couple of hours setting the cases up in the frame..

Man, I'm beside myself that I own one. Permanent modification turns my stomach! I would have to have a different junk frame to play with. But if I put many more miles on it, it will probably crack and become junk.
