Worked on the swingarm brace this afternoon. Lotta putzin' around getting nice joints. I have one final miter at the bottom to do, but will wait till "weld-day"to make an exact cut just incase anything moves.
I guess years of trim carpentry finally paid off. ...and hvac aluminum duct tape works pretty stinking well to hold things together while you scratch your head.

Rear axle slot junction will get small gussets as seen with the fancy paper template.

All told, the bracing adds 2lbs 7oz of stinking weight to the rear of the bike, but the tail light weighs LESS than ONE OUNCE  , so its a wash...

Every time I weld stainless, the stuff wants to move like crazy. I was going to ask what you were using for a tubing bender, but I think I now see  .

That's for sure. I watched a welder who was fed up with the problem weld two parts that he needed to join right to the iron welding table, to hold them in position. Then he welded them together, and as they cooled, they broke most of the welds to the table and moved the way they wanted to.

Just wondering:
As the torsional input/output is at each end of the swinger (axle/pivot shaft), would it not be better to connect your "X" to the tube that houses the pivot shaft? :? For ultimate stiffness this would effectively "box" the entire length of the swinger by eliminating the present unsupported cantilever section.

Just a thought.... :)

no worries, I thought of every possible scenario as far as chain clearance (lateral and vertical), and swingarm-to-frame clearance with suspension fully compressed.

see this post for pics..

The goal is to reduce twist in the rear arms. Although, maybe not quite as stiff as boxing to the pivot tube, there is no doubt that this will indeed reduce the majority of the "twist". In researching the layout, I found multiple examples supporting the method I chose...including a number of factory built braces. Google "swingarm bracing" Photos...

as to the welding...Jake, the guy who is building the board-tracker hardtail bike is doing the welding. The dude can weld stainless. Making Stainless production equiptment for huge cereal companies (General Mills, etc) is what he does for a day job. Im not a skilled enough welder...not even close...but Im working on it. :)

I know right? I was moving some stuff around and saw the stupid thing hanging on the wall and laughed when the thought crossed my mind. Pulled it down and took a couple of quick measurments and really laughed as I knew it was going to work, and would have enough material...

Whats insane is the curve of the sissybar and how it lines up with the swingarm tubes below is absolutely spot-on.

really should be using mild steel IMHO. the brace will flex less than the arm due to material differences. I suspect cracks will develop down the road in the bracing. .02
