I'm curious. With all the custom fab work people have done to a lot of specials, how do we define "special" these days? Anything not stock or does it need a certain about of frame/swing arm/fork mods? Would custom body work alone qualify?

Hmm, personally I'd say Cody's 70 H1 would be on the "mild" end of the "special" spectrum based on his mostly bolt-on mods, though that front fender he "massaged" to fit not only the 18" Lester but also the disc brake front-end is a nice piece of work. All in all I'd classify his former bike a special, and anything with more extensive mods would just exemplify the whole special concept...my .02.

Personally , I reckon a "special" is what you make it....... The red H1 above retains the essence of a '70 H1, but wheels, pipes, brakes, gauges make it unique, and the engineering stands out. There is no strict definition in my book!

Well, there is

restored, that's obvious.

Over restored, also obvious.

resto mod, mods of the era or just standard mods, chambers, carbs, pods, handle bars, maybe wheel change to mags, custom paint

specials, this includes cafe, bobber, occasional chopper, street dragger lots of mods basically, fabrication necessary

modern special, obviously forks, wheels, brakes, swinger, off of modern bikes

modern conversion special, old motor installed in a newer complete bike

Survivor, amazingly excellent shape without any restoration

rider, lots a "patina", some rebuilding, clean up and paint

rat, pretty much beat to hell, rusted and the like. Something only RB would ride

That's a great summary John.

I consider my bike a rat as far as finish goes but mechanically it's very functional.
If I took it to a show, I likely wouldn't even bother to wipe the spooge off... There is still a small percentage of people that would see the functionality of it all. Kind of like a rough track bike, I'd rather ride one of those than a shinny version of the same.

Definition of a Special - "I wonder if this will work?"
