Hi All,

My new project is a 71 H1, that the last owner made some chambers for. To hang those chambers, he cut out the D shaped part of the frame from each side where the original exhaust and rear foot pegs hang. Since the frame is modified already, I'm going to put on a modern front end and maybe change the swingarm. Now if I'm going to all that trouble I might as well look at reinforcing some of the weak areas of the frame.

So my question is, where are the weak spots in an early H1 frame and the important areas to reinforce?

Rich

If you aren't going to be racing, there is no need really. Just the standard tightening up of the suspension, which the modern stuff will take care of. Tapered bearings of course when converting the front forks. If you are doing it for the cool factor, then go for it. Some of the Denco stuff is unnecessary. Just remember you are tying the steering head to the swingarm pivot, and stopping any twist in the steering head.

One thing guys miss, is adding modern stuff usually adds a lot of wheelbase, and trail, which is going the wrong way for good handling. And can make the bike handle really strange. Figure out your WB, rake, and trail beforehand and then adjust accordingly before final assembly.

Here are the mods I did to a h2 frame for racing at Daytona. Not as pretty as Oxford's, but the down and dirty, get her done style. One other thing, test fit, as you don't want old parts to not fit anymore because of the bracing in the way now.

John,
Sorry for the late late reply. Yes I agree with you, and I'm probably not a good enough rider to really be able to tell the difference anyway! Some of it is just for the cool factor I guess, so I'll just do what necessary to stablize steering head to the swingarm pivot.

On another note, when I looked at your photobucket, I just kept clicking. :wtf: You've got years and years of cool stuff in there man! And I was laughing at all the goofy photoshopped pics and swapped heads! I have a rental in Rio Rancho and stop by every so often. Just spent a week at NM Tech Energetics lab learning how to NOT get blown up. It's a beautiful area with wide open roads! +

I had no idea, if you are ever here, give me a call for sure. And yeah, I have a bunch of stuff on PH from many years. I go through once in a while, going what the hell was I thinking...lol.

And we do have a great explosives school here in NM.
