To each their own, one of the best things about the S series is the light handling. 90 front and 100 rear. Fatties will have a negative effect.

After mulling it over you guys are right, I'm going to leave it alone. Possibly period correct mag wheels of the same size if I can find them, but keep the skinny tires. Focus on tuning the original components instead of replacing them.

Good idea, it's easy to 'over-tire' a small bike, they are pretty well balanced to begin with. Sounds like a good project, keep us updated!

Jim, are you sure the S series Wirges have the infernal internal baffle? I thought it was just the H pipes... And I have also heard the S Wirges are good performing pipes!

No, but I'm pretty sure the ones in the photo do, because the belly section is only about 6-1/2" long on the older H-series non-internal-baffle Wirges pipes. Those look like 10" bellies. Maybe someone modified later H pipes, no telling. You could see if the crap-baffles are in there by removing the silencers and looking in with a flashlight, or feeling around with a stick.

I purchased my new Wirges direct from the factory (Princeton IL) I believe in 1988 for my KH400, and they sounded great...

Immediately after switching for used Dencos, I absolutely noticed a seat of the pants increase in power over the Wirges and never ever went back. Would these have been considered late or early Wirges?

Very late, but as ThreePipesSmokin pointed out, I don't know if S3 Wirges chambers were made the bad way.

I don't see how to remove the silencers? Does the cap come off the end? I tried tapping on it but it didn't budge and I'll mar it if I go any harder.

The straight belly section measures 9" between the welds.

The baffle is carboned up, takes quite a bit to get them out. But the baffle everyone is talking about cannot be removed or cleaned.
