i had a battery die and just put it done to old age and got a replacement .
but on installation i tested across the battery with the motor running up to 4000 rpm and no change or increase in charge.
so i thought the low speed coil has crapped out but i checked it and its showing 204 ohms resistance between the the white and green wires.
so what do i check next ?
please bear in mind that i really dont understand anything electrical and need to be "lead by the nose "
thanks mark

I assume this is either an H2 or an H1D if it has a low speed coil. That coil has nothing to do with battery charging, it's one of two magneto coils that work together to power the CDI system.

You could have a bad regulator or bad wiring somewhere, including a bad ground. What is the resistance between the two yellow wires coming from the alternator? It should be about 0.4Ω.

If it charged earlier, you might check connections. Low speed coil doesn't effect the charging. Can be physical connection, charging coils in stator, rectifier or regulator. What Jim said.

Low spd coil has nothing to do with charging. Problem is probably stator or, more likely, regulator/rectifier. Difficult to diagnose short of swapping parts. Be sure all grounds are good and stator connectors are corrosion free.
 Late to the party :)

the resistance from the two yellow s is 2.9 ohms .??

not good huh.

What resistance does the meter read if you hold the two leads together with nothing between them?

Thanks jim it reads 2.0.
so i think its showing 0.9 allowing for the base line of 2.0

My guess is that your alternator charging coils are OK, so look for bad connections, bad grounds or bad regulator.
