I have recently purchased a 73 H1D with 4800 miles, the PO was running it on premix at 20:1 and the oil injector, it has taken a few days to get all the oil out of it but it seems to be running well now, the top end is fresh with .040 wisecos I made sure the oil pump was pumping and it is, the issue is the bike detonates above 5000rpm I'm running 93 octane. I tried retarding the timing last night but it still detonated and had no power, I really don't want to pull the heads and add another head gasket, but aside from running race fuel I'm not sure what else to do. this is my frist 2 stroke street bike I have had plenty of KZs but wanted something a bit different, now I'm getting a little frustrated that I cant even open this thing up to enjoy it. Any help would be great!

The answer is probably in the jetting.
What size main jets, needle clip position, type air filters, & exhaust are you running?

And where are you located?

I have not had the carbs apart yet, but it has cone filters and what looks like spec II chambers, I'll take the carbs apart tonight to see what jets and where the clips are.
in the meantime here are some pics:

Im in MD

These motors will run on 91, so there is a problem. These motors do sound like they are about to blow up all the time, so it could just be engine noise. Can you put up a sound or video recording?

What is its compression pressure? If too high you may not be able to drown the ping. Retarding ignition timing has little effect on ping, however has a HUGE effect on performance.

I know it is detonation, it will run up just fine with no load (down a hill), but on the flat and under a load you can hear it, I had a KZ 1000 that did the same thing, tore it down and found the PO had put 12.5:1 pistons, and my old KDX250 sounded exactly the same when it was real hot in 5th under a heavy load, it maybe this shitty E10 gas! I know my 47 Harley 80ci Flathead hates it.

Not necessary, throttle WFO kick hard until the needle quits going up. (take all the plugs out)

Since you are pulling carbs, this may be helpful: http://www.3cyl.com/mraxl/manuals/carbtune/carbtune.htm

Main jets should be 102.5-107.55 area... if smaller, that may be the source of the problem.
If compression is over 150psi then start looking for new heads as PO must have shaved them.

Do you have 3 pickups on the ignition?
