On these old triples, moisture can get in the brake assembly from sitting for years, the moisture causes corrosion between the brake shoe and friction material. Breaking the bond, and the friction material can come loose causing the wheel to lock. Shoes should be checked on all brakes with older brake shoes.

There are many stories behind this. Something a lot of folks know about but never gets attention until a serious problem arises.

Happened to me on a NOS set from eBay...I installed and started testing -- off they fell. :o

Thank goodness for Gorilla Glue and c-clamps!

Happened to me on my first H2. I always liked riveted shoes on my old cars.

Same here on a NOS set, few months after installing felt soft, pulled the hub and Bobs Your Uncle. Tossed them though, EBC and other sources for what I "think" are repops.

I took mine to a truck brake shop and got the originals re-lined for $35
You will need to give them the backing plate and wheel so they can machine the new material to the proper size.

Did they offer you the option for riveted.
I like the idea that a shop that does this everyday is willing to do a single custom set up for $35.

Seems like there are old and new ones that work forever or fail at will.
One would think that newer with modern adhesives would be best, but perhaps new could also NOS from 30 years ago.

I had pulled the rear wheel from my old H1 to find the shoes had started to come un-glued but never felt any difference in braking.
Odd in that I had inspected it when I first got it, rode 1,000 miles, and then pulled the wheel to change tires.

Back in the early nineties when I first got my H1 running, I pulled into a gas station, hit the front brake and one shoe jammed. With help from the original sagged-out steering head bearings the wheel fully locked to the left. Fortunately, the sagged-out original front tire was so hard I skidded straight to a stop with the steering fully locked.

A triple-threat of worn-out parts.

I got them relined.
