FMF 2 stroke muffler packing

Post subject:  FMF 2 stroke muffler packing
I ordered some FMF packing and instead of the pink stuff I received a product that is white and like a thick wool.

Apparently, FMF makes two kinds of 2 stroke packing. The pink stuff is "high perf" and the white stuff is just packing.

Should I use the white stuff or order the pink stuff?

Hmmm, I didn't realize there were 2 kinds... I used the white stuff without issues though.

Just to mention another option, I've used scraps of household insulation many times with good results. As I remember I changed it a little more often than the "real" stuff, but it's free. I compressed it quite a bit and held it in place with masking tape so I could shove it in the 2" tube.

You could get a bit colder in the winter if you keep robbing it from your attic... :lol:

I remember the packing compression discussions a while back whether to pack them tight or loose, it did say on the FMF package that the tighter the wrap, the less effective it is...
Just throwing that out there.

I've only seen and used the FMF white stuff for several years. I have tried the house insulation, but it seems to "erode" away faster than the FMF. Also, the tighter the packing the less likely/longer it takes for the packing to erode/blow out.

IMHO the FMF gives the nicest sound. It does indeed need replacement approx every 30 hrs of running time (as FMF recommends) to keep the best/quietest exhaust note.

Steel wool gives a great sound too -- although I seem to remember someone said it can catch fire?? I used steel wool in the 70's because is was available from my mom's kitchen cupboard.

You definitely don't want to use steel wool on a 4 stroke!
The sparks look cool if you ride at night though!!!

You will be happier with the white blanket you received. :D The "shredded" pink product won't work so well on a true baffle....its made to stuff a modern dirt bike/quad pipe can.
