I'm getting ready to order a set of rims from buchanon's but curious about spoke gauge . I have a set of sun rims now which has 8 ga. straight spokes on the front and they work fine . The rear on the other hand has 7ga>8ga . at least when I measure . My problem on the old rims is there has always been a slight bow to the spokes . Would I be able to run straight 8ga. on the rear with no problems ? I'm thinking that the thicker part at the hub if downsized would help eliminate the bow ? The rim is going to be 3.5in like my last rear rim I ordered . Does the wider rim make it necessary to have the swage?(i think thats what its called) to help with strengthening . I never had a spoke break or anything on the older rim its just bothersome to me . I called Buchanons today and the gal that answered was not very much help on the issue . Any help here appreciated , thanks

The "bow" you refer is likely the result of an improper drill angle of the hole in the rim. This angle is critical because when the spoke is properly tightened the nipple's shoulder will center on the drill hole's edge. This is what determines where the nipple will point. If the nipple points substantially away from the associated spoke hole in the hub, spoke curve results. This is why not all 40 hole rims are created equal.

Buchanan's buggered up the drilling angle on my rear 3.5 Excell rim (was drilled for a bigger hub circle than my specified S hub). The result was badly curved spokes!

Funny thing is there was a member on another board (10secH2) whose rear rim went though Buchanan's about the same time as mine. His posted pics clearly showed spoke curve the opposite to mine. I always wondered if Buchanan's goofed the two orders???

I devised a repair rather than waste more time and $$$$ screwing around with multiple cross border/cross continent shipping to have them fix their goof.

if poss i would be prudent but expensive (shipping) but if you send them the hub they can drill/build to suit .
i have built my own but with hindsight would have been better to send them the hubs and let them do it all.
just my experiance thats all.

I've thought of sending them myself . I just wanted to get rim done and ready as I'm gonna paint the rims . Then I would have to send everything back but that may be the best way I suppose . I have no clue where to take them for lacing in tucson anyhow . I will look a little closer at the old set as well to see whats up with them . I still may relace the rear on my existing set to see if that does help
