New H2B owner with a few questions. Is there a good source for info on how the different brake setups compare? Can I use a stock MC with one EX caliper in order to have a RS mirror?

Thanks, Rusty34

Yes, you can use the stock MC with the EX setup.

The "feel" using the stock 9/16in bore master with a single EX caliper is like a block of wood.

A VERY much better setup for a single caliper is a 1/2in (12.7mm) master. These are available aftermarket and some come with a mirror mount. The other advantage is there is a mechanical brake switch on the newer masters so all the junky plumbing can be eliminated in favour of a single line to the caliper.

And I have had different results
I used the stock MC with the EX caliper and SS brake lines with great results.
Can't imagine needing anything more for a street bike and the lever pull feels just right
One of the top 3 mods for any triple IMO

I have the ex500 caliper and didn't like the feel with the stock master cylinder, it was tired anyway. I rebuilt it
and still wasn't satisfied so I bought the stock 5/8th bore repo and really made the difference. I might add a second
disc just for looks but it really isn't needed. I do run braided lines and that helps to.

FWIW, 'Moo also runs a 1/2in master/single EX 500 caliper on his bike. Jim, among others, have commented on how well it works. I believe an EX 250 (same caliper as the EX500) comes with a 1/2in master as stock equipment.

1-2 finger stops are the norm around town with EBC129HH pads. A braided steel line and DOT3/4 fluid and proper bleeding are a must. Disposing of the stock hydraulic brake switch also reduces lever travel somewhat.

Stay away from DOT5 silicone, as it will usually give a mushy feel...

Thanks for the great replies. Currently have an EX caliper and EX master with no mirror mount and would like to put a RS mirror back on the bike. Should I consider putting original equipment brakes back on the bike or you recommend I need to stay with the EX brakes? I probably won't ride it hard enough to warrant a brake upgrade unless you feel the originals are really just not good enough.

I also noticed a dual brake conversion out there with Kawi master, two OEM Kawi single piston calipers and a four way joint. Is that one worth considering?

The stock brake is not very good. The fitting of an EX caliper is a HUGE improvement. As Jim C has indicated it really is a worthwhile upgrade. For now use your stock master cylinder and EX caliper combo and optimize the system later. There are 1/2in master cylinders out there with a mirror mount hole. Have a look at ebay....

The dual disks look neat but adds around 10lbs to the front wheel. One EX caliper with "HH" pads will out brake it.

I don't know what handlebars you're using, but bar-end mirrors work better than the stock type screw-in ones in many cases. Mine are the cheap ones off eBay, and have essentially no vibration caused blurring.

I had a look for you. Depending on what model year the EX250 master has the mirror mount:
