I had my 73 h1 at a stop with the clutch in and in first gear. I was on a slight incline and started rolling backwards a little and all of the sudden clunk the bike stopped abruptly. I was able to ride away with no problems and so I decided to try it again and the same thing happened. Ive never experienced this before does anyone know what might be the problem?

One rule I have learned on this site is to never I mean never roll or let your bike roll backwards in gear. It will mess up the tranny and or the shift drum. Yours is not the only bike to do that.

I think in some cases it is the internal mechanism of the kickstarter and you can break the kickstarter stop-bolt boss in the cases. Don't do that.

   I have been on this site for a while and this is the first I have ever heard this mentioned. Good timing though since I finished my build and have ridden my S3 a few times. Guess what? When I let it roll back in the driveway with the bike in gear and clutch pulled in - it stops hard on something. I was going to raise the question but now I don't have to. The accepted answer is DON'T DO THAT!

Great way to destroy cases, and a leg. NEVER roll backwards in gear while running.....

Its a factory parking brake for stopping on hills :) :) , NO NOT REALLY we have discused this before , it engages the kick start if you roll back in gear  , can cause damage to cases and kick start if moving at a fare speed , I have used it on steep hills to hold bike there , you touch the kick start lever and it engages it , NOT RECOMENDED

Can't remember who but saw this distruction first hand at the Gap some years ago in the parking lot
Rule: The only time a triple can go backward is if it is out of gear.

I've had it happen a few time by accident, and luckily no damage has been done. Just try to avoid it.
