This H1 currently has 14-49 with a 130/90/16 rear tire. This is to be a daily rider. My brain can't handle gear ratios. I would just run it and see once the project is ready, but I really could use a new chain and don't want to buy one if I am going to have to change sprockets and end up with the wrong length.

Any insight would be appreciated.

I don't know what you are asking but an observation would be, you bike is geared pretty low. Stock is 15/45 with an 18 inch tire that is 4 inches high. When you are in 5th it will be something like the stock set up in 3rd. Screaming at highway speeds. The stock set up is pretty good for acceleration and reasonable rpms at highway speeds.

Of course some of it depends on your engine tune.

15-45 was stock, at least for the later H1s, so you're geared pretty low. The stock sizes are usually a good starting point, but why not run it as-is for a few miles and get a feel for it before committing?

That is extremely low gearing. The 16 may not be that much smaller in diameter, but that also raises engine RPM per speed.

I like my gearing just a bit lower than stock, with is either 15/46, or easier on the chain, 16/49.

You can plug in your 500 and see what the different gearing does.

Stock is 15/45 = 3.0
You have 14/49 = 3.5

Your gearing means you will have higher final mph but with more likelihood of bogging off the line.

No more morning beer for you Dale!   You have it backwards. Bigger front, faster, smaller rear faster.

So what would I need to be close to stock? The smaller back wheel really throws me off. I might have to try like it is just to do some wheelies, but I do want to get what I need ordered. Something like 14-47 or more like 45?

Your wheel diameter is 2.5% smaller in circumference. With 15/45 at 5000 RPM compared to my H1 with 15/45 you would be turning 5125 RPM. 15/43 would be 13% taller. When I am turning 5000 you would be turning 4210 RPM (too few) Your present gearing You would be turning 5833 RPM (too many).

You really need to measure the circumference of your tire. Some 16's are as big as an 18". Measure it and get back to us.
