Is it more for noise purposes or does it also effect running performance? Thinking of using less than what is in there now as it seems to be to much to me. Thanks

It's mainly a noise thing......

Tuner did mention some dyno testing of race bikes that showed better power with tight packing, and decreasing power as less or none was used. It was an old thread, probably on the old board. What's significant for the track might not be noticed on street, however.

IMHO, Moderately tight packing should keep the exhaust gases only within the outlet pipe, effectively reducing stinger/bleed pipe area and increasing heat/high rpm power somewhat. Super tight packing does little for noise control and causes silenced chambers to approach the sharp crack sound of stingers.

Loose/no packing would allow gases into packing cavity of silencers, hence increasing size of stinger/bleed pipe, and as such probably don't perform as well as the above.

"Silenced" chambers with loose/no packing bark like mufflers with the baffle pulled :e9

Are you talking stock pipes or chambers?

I was talking about chambers myself , decided I'm gonna get rid of about half the packing. Right now there is a couple of full wraps on the.

Chambers will work better with full tight packing or plain pipe (of the same ID as the baffle). Loose or missing packing will create turbulence.

Would've thought a baffle in an expansion chamber was a stinger with a compromise to street sound levels - it'll work better packed fairly tight!!
