The cable broke near the twist-grip end. Because of my drag bars, I had plenty of cable housing. I cut a few inches off to get some cable sticking out, wrapped it around where the cable end goes, and left the cover off. Of course I didn't have full travel, but it got me home fine, saving a nice 70 mile ride.

The sliding parts are lightly greased, and the cable is lubed. The throttle felt fine, I guess it just got bent back and forth a couple thousand times too many since '78. :D

I never grease, dry graphite or silicone spray but never the two of course.

Yes, it probably does  but I assure you that everything was well lubricated, as proven by my black, greasy hands when I was finished. With the family out of town, it was either figure out a way to pull the cable, or pay for a tow truck, which would have meant revocation of my membership in the McGyver youth fellowship.

Neat trick! ;) If it were me I'd be tempted to turn the idle up a bunch to get home :?
