I did a quick search and came up with a chain inside the tank to clean up the rust. This sounds like a good idea. Acid was talked about but what type of acid should I use ? Also can someone tell what sealer to use on the inside of the tank, thats if I need it all ? My tank is ok, but rusty on the inside. Its off a KH500.

Cheers.

IMHO always coat an old tank. Caswell is my choice. Phosphoric acid or evap-o-rust for cleaning.

+ phosphoric acid or evaporust.

I throw the light duty swingset chain in there and swish it around a lot. After cleaning, I have stored my tank with a couple of quarts of two stroke fuel mix in it. It has stayed clean and shiny inside for 8 months on the shelf.

Thanks. The Caswell Distributor is just up the road, I will pick some up this afternoon and save myself $15 in Postage. I spoke to the guy and he said dont worry about the acid wash as the exposy will stick to the surface rust. He suggested nuts in the tank to get rid of loose rust. (I hope I can get the all out.....I will try the chain first) He also said the tank needs to be cleaned and dried really well befre applying the Epoxy.

Look on Mraxle's site there is a process in which you use a batery charger, water and soap with some electrodes. It works great and no chemicals. What is the process called again?? :banghead

I am going to clean it out with soapy water anyway. I might as well stick a battery charger and a bolt in it and see what happens. What's the worse that could happen ?

Hi

I used POR15 on my Z1. Has been running 2 years and 10000 km since. No problems what so ever.

POR 15 is a 3 step chemical procedure.
1) Cleaning, acid, I guess
2) Surface prep
3) Lining.

My 2 cents

what does this stuff do to the tanks paint? Mine could use a cleaning after sitting for years . Only thing is I had the stuff repainted before I ended up letting it sit . Not really wanting to paint it again if possible

Saran wrap and tape the hell out of the filler neck. And POR 15 is not near as good as the 2 part Caswell tank sealer.
