Post subject:  WARNING please read...... steering damper bracket

One VERY important mod for the triples is often overlooked, because of the rareity of occurance. But has caused many a crash, and will cause more as these bikes get older. The frame bracket for the hydraulic dampers on all triples is just a bent bracket. They are 40 or so years old and under a lot of stress, and they break! Usually causing broken head fins at least, or at worse a crash. One broke at the Gap with no damage. Another broke today causing a crash and a lot of road rash. I will let the victum tell the story.

If you have one of these models, the bracket is probably already almost broken through. Take the time to have it welded at the bend. Parts are getting hard to find, and pain hurts!

My wife's bracket snapped in the parking lot of EVERGLADES HOLIDAY PARK while backing up into a spot. Luckily it wasn't while driving. This was also an old KAWI. Her 77 kz1000.(with aftermarket stabilizer on the factory bracket)

it happened to me on the 70s on my first H2a, happily didn't fallen just broken some fins on the head
since this time always braced the bracket and then didn't fit the hydraulic steering damper cause when your frame, swing arm, shocjs and forks are with a good set up, you don't need it

Is this a H2 only problem?
I just checked my 74 H1 and the bracket looks different.
Also, I can't image the damper would be able to reach the cylinder head.

As I posted, any hydraulic damper mount should be checked or reinforced.

Moo, this is a great piece of advice for those not familiar with this failure point. No doubt our little commmunity will be better because of this message.

Thanks Mike. This had come up from time to time over the years, but on the old board I couldn't post an announcment or a sticky, so word of it would just move off the page.

When things like this come up, now we can keep it at the top.
