i installed new clutch plates (steel and fibers) when doing my engine rebuild and now I have noticed that I am getting a lot of drag when the clutch is pulled in. There's very little slack in the cable. it seems like the only culprit could be the range of travel of the actuator arm down on the engine? Anybody have any tips for adjusting it (set screw and nut on the end of the clutch push rod)?

Jason

Get some slack in the cable, then screw in the adj. screw in until the arm is at the very bottom of it's range. (about 8 O'clock) then back off 1/8th turn and tighten the lock nut while holding the screw in place. Take out the slack until you get 3 of 4 mm of free play at the lever.

Hi

When my H2was new to me about 2 years ago I had problems with either drag or slip. If the clutch was drag free it had some had some slip and the opposite  !!

The cure was:
1) Adjustment as described by Ja-Moo
2) New clutch cable, the old one moved freely when unloaded but had a high resistance when loaded.
3) A new clutch lever, the screw hole in the old one had become quite big.
4) New clutch lever screw, the size of the old one was reduced.

These 4 actions really improved my clutch.

Regards / Bjorn

And if you're not hung up on originality; ditch the stock perch and lever, and some real ones.

I once had a hair yanking clutch drag-or-slip problem too. I also replaced the whole perch and lever assembly with a CRG unit. Then installed a new cable. (routed carefuly!) new fiber and driven plates, inspected and adjusted my actuator, push rod and pressure plate. smoothed out the clutch basket "fingers" and finaly...And THIS is where the REAL magic happened...Located and installed a set of factory original clutch seperator rings. They gently seperate the discs when the lever is pulled, eliminating some friction and drag.It also helped a TON on cold mornings when you banged into first gear and the bike jumped forward and stalled. It was cool..Gears were still plentiful and cheap! Like a lot of us back decades ago, I always threw these away first clutch change! I guess there aren't REALY any EXTRA parts!!
