Just before I put it away for the winter, the stator cover on my H1F vibrated loose. Once back together, it quit charging. Diagnostics show that the stator windings are shorted(undoubtedly from the rotor hitting the stator). I meant to fix it over the winter, but things kept coming up. I've decided to just rewind it myself, but I've hit a snag before I've even started. Between my colorblindness, the wires being old and dirty, and everything being epoxied together, I can't tell which coils are the charging coils and I don't want to rewind the whole thing. I think I know, but I want to be certain before I take it apart. Can someone kindly tell me which of the 6 coils in the pic are responsible for the charging system? Thanks :)

The four that are NOT wrapped with cloth charge the battery and power the lights.

I would look for a replacement first. And check the brushs on yours for contact. And blue loctite on the cover bolts......

Thanks for the info. I put new brushes in all around, didn't make any difference. I've been looking for a used one for awhile, the only known good one I've ever seen is the $170 one on e-bay. For $170 I'll make sure mine is good and screwed up first

The brushes on the late H1 iggy control only the spark firing order. They have nothing to do with the charging system.

'You sure??? I just looked and the outer two brushes simply ground that portion of the rotor's slip ring to the stator case.

The late H1 uses a permanent magnet rotor. The alternator's unused/excess voltage is dumped to ground (like the H1D/h2 systems).

Nuh Uhhh. The three inner brushes ground the three coils at the right time. The outer two connect the ground ring and segment to the bike's ground. All five are for the ignition system. (see P. 146 of the Kawasaki manual)

That would explain why changing the brushes made zero difference in my charging problem
