Back in the 70s and 80s the talk was to use A.T.F. in the gearcase for less resistance. I'm sure that counted for many fried shift forks and components. Also, we used N.D. 30 motor oil. (the non-detergent wouldn't suspend the crap in the oil.) I NEVER HAD ANY REAL PROBLEMS WITH THE N.D.30. Right now, I'm running 5w30 full synthetic in my brand new and carefully shimmed tranny. I've experienced no clutch slip. But the stuff is so light that I keep finding small oil leaks. The clutch and the shifting is very precise, though. So, my question is: What did I miss while I stopped riding H2s? What is the current favorite type and weight? Is a nice quality N.D. still made? Thanks!

I'm probably in the same boat as you, re gearbox oil, ZERO, but I think if you use one of the currently labelled "2-stroke transmission oils" you won't be far out. I used ATF, and I used 80/90 gear oil back in the day, without (much) ill effect, but times have changed,(my wife keeps informing me!). I invite further comments!! :?

I use Lucas 80/90 in all my 2 strokes (4 strokes too that have a seperate trans). You can buy it any Auto Zone. It has the friction modifier in it for wet clutch packs.

Personally I like to mix Redline, Mobil 1, Amsoil, Belray Gear Saver and Royal Purple two stroke trans oil with a splash of ATF and some Mazola corn oil (just in case some splashes on my face). I find that it covers all the bases and makes it a real pretty color.
