Re-ringing my 75 S3 I have new unopened NOS rings from my local Kawi dealer oil ring expander and two iron rings on light gray and one dark gray question is which ring is the top ring :? , both are the same size and no markings other than the shades of gray....

According to the manual the Top ring is chamfered and the bottom is UN-chamferred.
the top being shiny and the bottom black.
I was always taught the shiny( chrome) ring goes top and the black one goes on the bottom no matter what motor you build..
I found after market rings like TP are the same in colour. I have had a magnifying glass out to look for the chamfered edges . Both the same

If you look at the ring itself, the two are different "thickness" from bore face to piston groove.

The wider ring is the top ring, the narrower one is second, to allow for the expander to be placed behind it.

My advice would also include: INSTALL THE EXPANDERS, DON'T DELETE THEM.
