Can someone please tell me at what revs the orange charge light indicator usually goes out? Mine is going out just about 2000rpm is this about right?

The charging system on early H1's is poor and the CDI has a high demand on current. It is the design that is at fault.

Yes, the stock mechanical regulator can be adjusted. You will be wanting to check to see what the highest voltage is at revs better than 2500-3000. You should be looking for a max of around 14.5 volts as I recall. If below this value remove the cover of the regulator (be sure the points are clean) and bend the tang that attaches the leaf spring (that applies pressure to the points) so more pressure is applied to the points. Re check your max voltages after adjusting.

Stock charging system the light usually goes out around 1400. Bad connections, dirty slip rings, poor grounds, dead /weak battery etc. often are the real issues.

Yes, Scott, probably so. But I owned an H1B and the charging system, in my opinion, is crapola! As far as that goes, the ignition system (CDI) is crapola.
As much as I would like to own a '69 H1, it would have a late model CDI and ignition system (or aftermarket) on it if it was to be riden.
All you early H1 driver's can shoot me if you like but that is my opinion. :eh:

Your conversion ( http://kawtriple.com/mraxl/tips/regulat ... ersion.htm ) is certainly a step in the right direction! It eliminates the losses in the selenium rectifier and the antiquated regulator, but the rotor/stator inefficiencies remain.

The early alternator stators don't have much in them to go wrong. As far as the "fragile as glass" rotor goes, that too can be fixed to withstand serious abuse ;)

A healthy charging system makes for a happy iggy system :D But you're right. In stock form the early systems suck! :e9
