I dig playing with small bore two strokes too. Locked up my 175 again on the toll road today.  It ran probably the best ever up to this point. Is it even possible to make an air cooled motor wind wide open for ten miles or so? Without detuning it a ton? I have a 36 mm mikuni to try.

But 10 minutes.....ummmm....... |

Main jet is larger already. I found the problem, base gasket failed. Rats, guess I need to three bond it next time.

One of the four bolts that hold the cylinder came loose, which in turn allowed the gasket to come loose and suck air like no tomorrow. What did you break today ?

It's not easy flying the vintage flag. Gotta get my h2 or Rd finished, something that'll lug at 75 mph with ease and not vibrate apart. |

What Erv Kanemoto used to do was center punch the base gasket areas on both the cases and cylinders, to five a little spike for holding base gaskets. Yamaha TZ road racer engine base gaskets are a stainless steel, with carbon sealing facing on each side, and they are very hard to get to leak. If I had my way, Kawasaki two stroke base gaskets would be dead soft aluminum sheet, and then, and only then, I'd use the Three Bond 1194 to seal 'em up. Or, I'd make 'em like the Yamaha ones, they also work well, and are reusable as well. On the latest version of what I'd do to the base gaskets areas on triples, I'd machine the top of the cases to allow for a fairly thick single base gasket area, then, weld that one piece base to the cases, then finish ill flat. This way, I'd have a flat area that has a larger area around the transfer ports for gasket retention. Erv's method works well. |

I would say just do a little preventative matainiance, and check the bolt tightness from time to time. That was the problem...... |

Always GOT to be suspicious when a small two stroke runs "better than usual and with more power". Almost always too lean and about to lock up. Reminds me of the day in 1978 when my little Honda moped went about 35mph...I was thrilled...for a short while.

I'm also nutty about getting my gasket surfaces perfectly clean. While on the subject of tightening things....I also have my swing arm get loose on occassion. Started using lock-tite. |
