I have one case hole that is stripping (M6x - fine thread ?) and two head studs (actually allens now) that are loose (one with a heli-coil, the other just stripped M8x course thread ?).

Rather than drive all over town trying to find them (or keenserts, they're a possible use in some areas but not all) does anyone know specifically what/how I would look for the right kit or package that would cover most of our sizes? At least the 6 and 8 but looking on line the descriptions confuse me (not hard to do)...

Thanks,
bb

You are lucky then... I had to buy a kit for one size only. Mind you, for $30 I have enough inserts to last a life time for that size.

I know John, being the third owner (really the second since the original owner never rode it, not even from the store he bought it in and I worked with the the second owner (his name was Ramon Negre, the original owners brother), Ramon rode it a few times, enough to put about 2k miles when I got it including once to the shop we worked in where I first saw it and bought it for $600.

That leaves ME to strip out this stuff over the 34 years I've owned it. Although the heads were stripped when I got them back from the guy that did my porting 12 years ago - before I started doing my own stuff like that - so I've been living with it and band-aid stuff.

Yeah the local places here SUCK - I had to order frigging spark plugs for my truck :banghead that's why I just want to order a kit or the ones I need. I have a SAE that's a good size but already have one mixed spot I'l like to keep it at that ONE spot.

Your spark plug holes are stripped? (nothing else on a head to strip that I can think of)

ahhhh I was just about to ask that myself Jim.
They used to sell nice "Kemsirts" like a huge heavy helicoil for when you strip out a head.
(dont ask)

OK beat me up - cylinder not head, not multi-tasking well. I have not checked MMaster, good reminder.

Barry,
McMaster also has Heli-coils that are different than the standard units
They don't require installtion tools or special taps.
They also require a much smaller hole.
They come with a thread locker on the outer threads that allegedly holds them in the threaded hole (did not work for me).
I didn't want to use a standard unit for side cover thread repair as there wasn't going to be much material left.
Would not recommend these non-tanged units for anything that has to be strong but they work great so long as you use the red permanent Loctite on the outer threads.

While most car parts places in my area do not carry them (and have never heard of them), the NAPA parts store has just about every size metric heli-coil kit I've needed, fine or course thread. We have a NAPA warehouse not far from me and if the store doesn't have it in stock, the warehouse will have it to the store in a few hours. Good luck.
