So when my bike is sitting there idling I notice that a lot of oil builds up on my bike stand right behind the pipe for the center cylinder. Seems to be getting too much oil. What's the most likely culprit? I've got good compression on that cylinder (140 or so) and good spark

Thanks
Jason

possibly a weak check valve on that cylinder

Hi

I had a "hard to find" oil leakage. By color it was possible to determine that it was two-stroke oil (gear oil=red, two-stroke oil=blue). It was a lot of oil on the side stand.
It finally ended up to be loose oil line screws on the the pump.

Regards / Bjorn

Thanks guys, I'll have to dig into the specs on the check valves and look into it

So I checked the resource page hoping to find some info on servicing the check valves and i didn't come across anything. Anybody have any advice? Cleaning them out seems pretty straight forward, but do I need to check spring strenght? Make sure the ball is still round?

Above are some links where check valve info is available. However, I doubt there is a problem there if lines are full. Chances are is is residual crank case spooge and/or exhaust pipe with unburned oil.

Take it out and run the pi$$ out of it for a few miles and see if the problem goes away.

as my buddy always said."if in doubt give a thrash up the street" kill or cure.
but that was his stock answer for all ills.

okay, i'll give it a shot. seems like if there is oil building up in the pipe, something else must be wrong, right?

Not necessarily.... with a bike that is new to the owner and especially one that the motor has not been torn down there are a lot of unknowns. The crankcase will load up if the bike isn't routinely run to redline on a frequent basis and the result is excessive smoking. Maybe a plug was fouled and run that way for a length of time or maybe a carb wasn't setup properly.... these things will cause the crankcase to load up and then put excessive oil in the pipes.

You could tear down the motor and clean out the crankcase, burnout and/or clean the baffles & exhaust, test check valves, test pump output or just run the pi$$ out of it for a bit to see if it clears before getting too deeply involved in analysis.

As long as the oil lines are filled and the carbs are setup right there is no harm done by flogging it and it is sure a lot easier than any of the alternatives. From experience, I can tell you it happens a lot and the suggested flogging usually cures it. Over oiling by the pump on only one cylinder is extremely unlikely to ever happen.
