Post subject:  H2 Timing Question(s)

Yesterday I thought I'd recheck my timing, so I brushed up by reading the manual... I set the pointer when the indicater read 0.123 in (3.13mm) , turned the crank until the pointer lined up with the "S" mark closest to the "L" mark and then checked and slightly adjusted the corresponding signal coil so that the embossed mark on the coil lines up with the trailing edge of the rotor tang as described in the manual. I repeated these steps for the other two cylinders. One thing I should mention is that the pointer position had to be slightly altered between cylinders. After using the dial indicator, I followed up with using a timing light.
Starting with the left cylinder, I noticed that the timing mark dose'nt line up with the pointer. It's close but not spot on. The other two cylinders mayber slightly closer to matching the pointer than the left.

My question is: since there are some differences between cylinders, should I have followed up with the timing light at each cylinder before moving the dial indicator to the other cylinders? Will moving the signal coil in the proper direction bring the timing mark too the pointer and finally, moving the coil which direction either advances or retards the timing. Hopefully I have'nt left everyone totally confused.

Thanks,

Jim

If you set the pointer for any one cyl then all cyl should be the same, ie, all pistons should be .123BTDC at the timing pointer. If not, the crank is not properly phased... not 120deg apart.

Although not right, if one cyl is off, I'd time that cyl individually.

Thanks for the advice Dale. I'll do that before heading out for my ride. Since completing the rebuild in July I've managed 2100 trouble free miles. Hec that's the same as a round trip from here to the Gap!

You can't accurately set the timing without a timing light. Get a light on it.

Moo ,just got back in from the shop. I individually rechecked each one with dial indicator followed by timing light before moving to the next cylinder. Timing mark(s) on rotor match with pointer. Still have a question about when adjusting signal coil. Say I had to adjust the left coil by moving it clockwise a smidge to have the timing light spot on, was this advancing or retarding??

I'm going riding, it's sunny and 60 degrees, very unusual for up here this time of year. Riding days comming to an end soon I'm afraid.

Thanks, Jim

Crank turns ccw. Moving pickup toward rotation means it will fire earlier so that is advancing.

Just don't for get the advance, the motor needs to be above 4000 rpm.

And this means about 90% of the timing lights are out of their maximum accurate speed, since that's 8000 rpm for a 4-stroke.

I had purchased a Craftsman digital light that has a button for 2 cycle. Has other functions I don't need but you never know. Moo I did remember to hit the 4000 rpm while doing the strobe test. Just got back from a quick 50 mile ride. Weather's great. May do another one before the afternoon ends. Thanks guys for your help.

Forgive me Jim if I am reading this wrong, or my memory of timing steps has failed me, but you adjust the dial gauge to 3.13mm BTDC and set the pointer to the rotor "S" mark, then you rotate the motor so that when the pointer now aligns with the "L", your signal coil mark should be adjusted/aligned with the trailing edge of the rotor tang. Again, please forgive me if I misread that you adjusted the signal coil with the pointer aligned with the "S"... :eh:
