Post subject: | noisy new clutch discs - H2 |
I replaced my fiber clutch discs and springs today. Upon starting, there was a faint raspy noise. When I pulled the clutch lever, it became much more pronounced. I took it apart again, inspected (nothing suspicious) and re assembled. It still makes the same sound, almost like a raspy metallic sound when the clutch lever is pulled. These discs are K&L brand discs. I took the bike for a spin around the block and they function perfectly, but I just can't figure out what is causing this. Has anyone experienced this? Do they need to be "broken in"? |

One or more may be hitting the cover. Did you check for scrape marks when you took it off? |

By the way, I'm asking myself "seriously". Thanks for the idea Jim |

I haven't been through that personally, but yes, I think if that's the problem you can belt sand or file or any reasonable method to take a little off the tabs where they're hitting. It's a halfway common problem on aftermarket plates. (And of course, check what Dewman said.) |

Dewman418 wrote: Is the fibre plate underthe retainer clip trimmed ![]() Yep, did that to slip the ring over it. The quality of the K&L's looks pretty good, but I remember thinking that the tabs were so much bigger. I will take a look this afternoon |

yup, tabs were too big. Nothing towards the guy who I bought them from. I'm sure he didn't know and I'll let him know of my experience. Lots of tranny oil later... |

You need to trim several of the tabs, or they hit the cover. It comes from the clutch plates being used on different models of bikes. I trimmed them with a bench grinder. Don't get them too hot. |

I cleaned the rib off the inside of the cover on mine and it worked pretty well. make sure you account for the disc position when you have the clutch disengaged. Mine squeels a bit when I pull the clutch... |
