I really don't know the precise product used by the last owner, but this red stuff is a bear to remove. I obviously don't want to scare the aluminum by using a steel pick. I can say its adhered well. Any ideas men?

I believe that's the remnants of a red fiber seal washer. I'd use something like a scriber to try to get it to come loose, but as you said, care should be used.

Jim, once you said "fiber" heat came to mind. I hit it with the torch for maybe 5-10 seconds and it pulled right out, thanks!

The ONLY chemical sealer that should ever be used, same stuff, Kawasaki Silver Seal, Yama-Bond 4, Three-Bond 1194, gray non-hardening sealer, it is what is used between gasket less case halves to seal them.

Can be used metal to metal, metal to gasket, everything but exhaust heat.

I use Loctite 574. Much easier to remove when needed. It`s the ONLY sealer recommended by Porsche to seal their engine cases metal to metal.
