Post subject:  Issue gear H2

Hello everyone I have a 1972 H2 I find that when downshifting from third to second and sometimes from second to first gear, the lever will do the idle stroke without engaging the gear. It never happens on upshifts. Any ideas, advice. Thank you all.

Check for slop in shift linkage.

To understand, which linkages are you talking about, the ones inside the clutch sign or the ones in the gearshift? Thanks

I'm sure Dale was referring to the exterior linkage, on the left side of the transmission, connecting the shift lever to the shift shaft.

I agree with the above posts. It often happens that the shift lever will hit the pipe when shifting down, this keeps the lever from moving enough to fully rotate the shift shaft. When shifting up, there is nothing keeping it from full motion.

Shifter stop pin not centering lever between shifts in one direction, or, pin is bent.

Replace stop pin only with a stop pin from F8/F5/F9, they are adjustable.

Unfortunately, I have already checked, the downward pedal travel does not meet any obstacles

Can you kindly, if you can, point me to the part that you think is defective in a picture? I thank you very much.

Gain access to the shifter behind the clutch ( remove clutch and clutch hub ).

Now, look closely at the claw that catches and moves the shift drum. The claw is sitting off center when it is in the center area of the drum pins. The claw needs to be centered between shifts, or it will miss the pin, and not move the drum. This will only occur in ONE direction, depending on which side of the claw has a larger pin gap, to the smaller distance.

Those two distances need to be the same, not one more than the other. A few things can cause the distances to vary, worn shifter return spring ( the round spring on thr shifter shaft ), the stop pin sitting offset, favoring one claw over the other, the linkage and levers on the shift lever side installed incorrectly, not allowing the claw to center, stop pin bent from bike falling over, and more.

The stock H & S pins are set position. The F series stop pins are eccentric, fit in the H & S engines, and are adjustable so the claw can be centered on the shift drum pins.
