That looks like where the clutch cable housing sits, with the cable extending into the area where the front sprocket is. Edit: Scully beat me to the ENTER key. |

They often get plugged and the top of the case has so much crud you can't even tell there are holes under there. |

Thank you for confirming. I searched for access on the underside couldn't find them. They are plugged tight, likely from vegetation, outdoor storage. I was going to use a steel wire to poke them out. Cases being split any day now, so no need now. |
