Can you guys take a listen to this whining, and possibly let me know where to start looking to fix it.

Engine sounds great, shifts & rides good.

It's the primary drive gears. What do you know about the right crank bearing and the right (input) transmission bearing?

Don't really know anything about the bearings.
But I guess I'm about to learn with help.

So what is my first option here?
Start looking for gears & bearings.

I'm pretty mechanically inclined, just did not expect to have this problem.

Does the engine have to come out of bike to fix?
Rookie question

Any good mechanics near tampa?

I would take off the clutch cover and shove the end of the crank around to see there's any slop in the bearing. You should be able push on the clutch to feel play in that transmission bearing too. You'll be able to see if there's any unusual wear on the gears, too.

I'm going to look at the parts book to familiarize myself with what part numbers to look at.
I woyld think to look under the transmission drum page?
Or elswhere?

My concern is that if the primary gears are making that much noise, one of the bearings may have worn and is letting a shaft get out of position. Since the two primary gears are are supported by the two shafts, if one or both are out of position, the gears have to be out of position too.

As I said above, one of the bearings is the right crankshaft bearing, just inside the primary drive gear, and the other is the bearing at the clutch, which is the transmission input shaft bearing. Once you take off the clutch cover, the primary gear and the clutch are right there in front of you.

I suppose the clutch bearing could be at fault too, allowing the gear on the clutch basket to be where it shouldn't be. If any of this is the cause of the noise, the gears will move around if you push on them. They shouldn't do that.

So in the book on page 80.

We are looking at bearing #27 & #37

Is one of these the clutch bearing?

No, but 27 is the transmission input shaft bearing, which is one that could cause the problem if its very worn.

What transmission lube are you running? I sure hope it IS NOT ATF, or low viscosity engine oil.

Best gearbox lube is 85W-90 GEAR OIL.

I agree, Dave... but I ran ATF in my H2 for a good 40,000 miles with no bad results. A couple years ago after I had it apart I went to gear oil. But I never had any unusual gear whine from the ATF.
