Good into from Tim and Dale above.
What I have always done in the past is this, in order.
Disconnect drive cable at gauge, hold cable,
Start engine and let idle, and watch inner cable for proper rotation
If in doubt, remove oil pump cover and tach drive cable, start engine and watch cable drive in clutch cover. (in the past, I have made a tool out of a broken cable, that has a holder to hold in my hand, inner cable only. I then insert the tool into the drive and start the engine. Holding the tool in my fingers, I feel the drive and its condition. If good,I go to the cable
The inner cable inserts into the outer cable from the engine end, and the inner pulls out from the engine end of the outer cable. Once removed, the inner cable can be physically inspected for damage. If in good condition, it should be lubricated and inserted into the outer, and returned to the engine. Restart the engine and watch the inner cable for "glitched", replace as needed.
THE best cable lube is a dry lube, brand name is DRI-SLIDE, goes on as a liquid, emulsifies into a dry coating, lasts decades. A liquid lube, or grease isn't the best, doesn't last long.
Anything past that, it is the gauge itself. There are people here that do gauge repair, revise.
