Hello everyone, yesterday with my blue 72 H2, after a few miles, the tachometer needle, with the engine idling, started to dance from 1000 to 2000 rpm. At the start the problem did not occur and the engine idle speed was stable at 1200/1400 rpm. Today I did another test drive and the problem did not occur, but since it did it once I think that sooner or later it may occur again. Any ideas or advice on causes? Thanks to all.

The first thing to consider is the tach cable.
Otherwise, tach disassembly will be required.

It might be (though doubtful in my opinion) be a nylon oil pump drive gear problem as well since that drives the tach. I was always told to check and make sure that the tach cable is still turning if the tach ever stops working for that reason and if it doesn't to verify that the tach drive is turning because if it isn't the oil pump isn't either. That being said I have never had one go bad.

Good into from Tim and Dale above.

What I have always done in the past is this, in order.

Disconnect drive cable at gauge, hold cable,

Start engine and let idle, and watch inner cable for proper rotation

If in doubt, remove oil pump cover and tach drive cable, start engine and watch cable drive in clutch cover. (in the past, I have made a tool out of a broken cable, that has a holder to hold in my hand, inner cable only. I then insert the tool into the drive and start the engine. Holding the tool in my fingers, I feel the drive and its condition. If good,I go to the cable

The inner cable inserts into the outer cable from the engine end, and the inner pulls out from the engine end of the outer cable. Once removed, the inner cable can be physically inspected for damage. If in good condition, it should be lubricated and inserted into the outer, and returned to the engine. Restart the engine and watch the inner cable for "glitched", replace as needed.

THE best cable lube is a dry lube, brand name is DRI-SLIDE, goes on as a liquid, emulsifies into a dry coating, lasts decades. A liquid lube, or grease isn't the best, doesn't last long.

Anything past that, it is the gauge itself. There are people here that do gauge repair, revise.

Plus one on the dri slide. I have been using it since the 70s. It is great stuff.
