I have a set of cylinders that need work for an engine I'm rebuilding. I need pistons so will probably have them bored to the next oversize and new pistons fitted. But I'm also considering having someone do some port work, get a little more performance. Is there an order to this kind of work? Do you bore first, then have the ports done? Or vice versa? Or does it not matter at all?

Thanks,

Dave the engine newbie

Do the porting first. Then if you slip and ding the cylinder wall it will be fixed when it's bored. Also unless you're adding reeds, porting for a little more power will mean a little less low and midrange torque. I wouldn't do any porting unless it's getting bigger carburetors and decent chambers too.
