Post subject:  Tail Light Issues

Happy Independence Day weekend everybody.
I recently purchased an H1D for restoration which was mostly complete. My plan is to get all of the issues sorted out before I completely disassemble the bike. It didn't have turn signals when I bought it and now they're on and working. All of the electrics work normally except the tail light. The front and rear brake light circuits are working and the parking light works when I turn the key all the way to the right. I put a meter on the pin connector under the seat and I don't have any voltage to the tail light circuit when the headlight is switched on. I studied the wiring diagram and I'm not seeing an obvious spot to hunt for a short circuit. I split the multi pin connector in the head light bucket and didn't see anything obvious. Chasing electrons is not my thing. Thanks for any suggestions....

You're not looking for a short circuit... that would blow a fuse. You're looking for an open circuit. Going back to the diagram, go far enough back to the source that you measure voltage when the headlight is turned on. Then trace the wire toward the tail light one step at a time until you don't have voltage and you'll know where the problem is.

Thanks Jim,

Like I said, electrons aren't my bag. From looking at the wiring diagram, the circuit from the ignition switch to the parking light is easy and straightforward but I am really struggling with the the tail light circuit. If I don't have voltage in the the multi pin connector in the head light, where do I go next? The dimmer switch?

With key "on" do you have light in tach & speedo.... does headlight wok normally?

Thanks for the reply mraxl.
Just checked and no lights in tach and speedo..
Headlight works on both high and low beam.

See http://kawatriple.com/wiring/h1dwire.jpg
There is a "Headlight/Kill Sw" at top left of page.
The four pin connector should have 12v on the brn wire when unplugged and key on.... check for 12v.
If 12v is present, it should apply 12v to blue wire... thru the switch.
The blue wire then goes to the tach & speedo as well as the ign switch... then to tail light when ign is on.
You may need to investigate the light switch and/or wiring to the switch.

I'll check it out.
Thank you!!

Removed switch from housing.
Key on / switch off = power at brn wire
Key on / switch on = power at brn, blue and orange wires.

Any time you have 12v on the blue wire in the 4pin light sw connector there should be power to the tach/speedo lights as it is a direct connection.... if not, the blue wire is broken.
