What is the best way to remove this little bugger?

penetrating oil has been working for a few days...

There looks to be a dowel in there behind it-- can I smack them both from the other side/end?

Naturally I won't go smacking anything before knowing it'll be ok--- I'm always cautious with these aluminum parts!!

Just hook it out, you are not going to re-use it.

I just put a medium sized screwdriver blade in so the tip is behind the edge of the seal and lever it out. If the shaft is against the edge of the bore, you can protect that with a little piece of wood or plastic, etc., to keep from marring it.
