Hey Monte did you move ?
Also did you get the tach working properly?
First thing I thought of was the plastic gear in the clutch cover
They do crack

Yeah Dave, decided to relocate to an area I could sorta afford to retire in...CA sadly wasn't on the menu. I will be checking the cable, pin and gear tomorrow. I'll let y'all (see, I'm already soundin' local) know what I find. Thanks again guys for all the ideas.

Well, I checked the cable again, looks good, the plastic gear is not cracked and the pin is in place. So, unless there is a way to adjust the tach internally so the needle starts moving sooner and still rests at zero when off, I live with it. Thanks again for the help.

I would think you also checked the tach/oil pump drive pinion on the end of the crank when you just had the clutch cover off, they can come lose if the wrong lock washer is used.

If all else is good, it'd have to be in the tach inner workings.
