The tach on my 71 H1 had a catastrophic internal failure so I had it professionally rebuilt (all the innererds needed replaced). When I got it back it seems to be about 1500 rpm off...needle doesn't even budge at an idle. I sent it back to Don and he says it tests fine, must be the cable or gear...they seem good to me. I guess my question is: did the early years have differently geared tachs? Any suggestions? Thanks, Monte.

500s all had the same ratio.

Thanks John. Any thoughts on why it doesn't start moving until the engine hits a 1000 or so revs? It's nice and smooth with my new red line at about 7500 r.

If you're sure the cable is turning the tach movement and it's not showing idle speed, it's not working correctly.

Just thinking out loud- did you repaint the needle and could it be semi tacky and sticking to the stop? I’ve had that happen on an automotive speedo of mine.

Thanks for the input guys. The cable is turning and the needle doesn't seem to be sticking as it smoothly starts moving when the revs build to about 1000+ rpm and then reads low thru the entire range. Don Fulsang in Florida, listed in the services section of the forum, did the rebuild and when I contacted him about the issue was kind enough to take it back, test it and in finding nothing wrong, send it back to me at no charge. Oh well, if after riding her for almost 50 years I haven't figured out when to shift by now...

Don usually recalibrates. Stock tach were usually high.

I think there is a pin in the cable fitting in the side cover, is that pin in place and tight? If not, the cable could be slipping in the drive.

I think I'd take the cable off the tach end, and see if the inner cable will turn freely. If not the pin is in place and fine.

Pull the cable out of the sheath and inspect it,,, I have seen them break clean inside the sheath and they will still spin but will have symptoms like you describe...
