If you have everything off, disconnect the positive battery cable and measure the current (milliamps or mA) between the cable and the battery terminal, what do you get?

An open circuit would be infinity ohms, by the way. The capacitor in the regulators I make would cause a resistance reading to start out very low (near short circuit) and quickly gain resistance (ohms) until it stabilized at a high value. "Resistance" is resistance to current flow, so you want a lot of it when everything is turned off.

Measuring that, I got a rising ohms reading. Just checked the battery now, looks like this has killed it, really won't take a charge and is at 11.4 volts.

I had asked for a current reading in milliamps, not a resistance (ohms) reading.

The milliamp value drops slowly, seems to not go much below 450 Ma, with the battery at 11 volts. The battery will not hold a charge though. I could use a regulated power supply and retest if you like.

OK, now unplug the regulator's red wire and tell me what the current is please, battery cable to battery terminal. (mA)

With the regulator red wire unplugged, its an open circuit from battery positive lead to the battery positive terminal. 0.0 mA.

It does seem like the regulator has a problem. If you email me I'll send you my address and you can return it under warranty. I assume you bought it less than five years ago.

You didn't accidentally connect the battery backwards at some point, did you?

Thank you Jim. I rebuilt the bike in 2017, and got it running in June of that year. I have not pulled the battery out since then, no has not been connected in reverse polarity.
