IF you half fill an old (they're all old) 30mm Mikuni float bowl with petrol (gas!), it will wick-up through the casting and saturate the gasket surface, and keep doing it, wetting the outside of the Carb. Nothing to do with a split overflow tube, I just haven't seen this before. Anyone run into this before, and is it an issue, and what can we do about it!?! I've set up a couple to see if it eventually stops or empties a float-bowl! ![]() |

Check to see if the bowl is flat across the gasket surface.... sometimes they warp from over tightening. |

Thanks, Dale, I am talking about a float bowl, on the bench, not on a carb. Half filled with fuel, it wicks up through the actual material the float bowl is made of. Almost like a sponge absorbing water!?! |

That's a new one on me too, Rod. Maybe a sealer made for porous aluminum castings would fix it if it's a problem. |

So I am thinking maybe ALL of these old float bowls are doing this. Another H2 owner in Adelaide, strangely enough, put it up on a FB forum, and I was going to fix him up with some spare bowls, until I actually tested them! It could be the source of unexplained leaks, it is actually enough of a weep to be significant. Got me scratching my head, this one! |

Maybe the ethanol is finally getting to the zink based pot metal and leaching it out. Some Phenolic epoxy will fix it up. Not sure if there is a problem, as the fuel is not wicking through to the outside. |

When I got my brand new Yamaha TZ2509, it had a problem seizing pistons. Nothing was wrong in the tune, ignition, but, a pressure and vacuum test showed excessive porosity in the actual engine cases. I lived in Merced, Ca., than, and wasn't sure how to fix that, save another set of new cases, that might have the same porosity issues as mine. A friend of mine that worked with Jet Ski engines said they had the same issues with the water manifolds from the aftermarket, and had a solution. He lived in Fremont, Ca., and aid there was this place on the highway that did vacuum resin impregnation of all those aftermarket water manifolds, why not cases? I tracked the place down, giant sign on the Bayshore Freeway "STOP CASTING POROSITY". $40.00 later, cases are resin impregnated, not one more seizure problem from the cases. I don't know if there are any facilities that do that sort of stuff in Australia, nut if so, that might help fill and seal off the float bowls. It does involve low heat, but it didn't seem to warp anyting on my cases. We had a number of case sets treated by those people, worked every time. |

I wonder if polishing the bowls with something like Autosol would eliminate this? I think John is right, that ethanol or gasoline detergents could be etching the metal and perhaps a quick polish would be a fix? |

We line our fuel tanks with Caswell (or whatever is now the proven current go-to liner), so how about lining the float bowls with this same stuff...? |
