Hi guys-

This engine is from a barn find, it has been sitting for 20+ years if not more. I did a compression check and got the following:

#1- 139psi
#2- 131psi
#3- 125psi

Gonna be dismantling the entire engine to check everything and replace as nessesary. What are your sujestions as what I should be looking for and the best place to get an entire engine gasket/seal kit?
Thanks in advance!

Was test done with pipes and mufflers in place, and carbs held wide open?

Test was done with no pipes and no carbs installed, engine is out of chassis.

Also-

Engine is going into a hybrid, doner bike is a 85' 600 ninja. Any sujestions as to mods I should be doing to engine to squeeze some more HP and make it more bullit proof, without going too crazy, would be great!

Thanks again.

It just depends on how far you want to go with it. You could do a wild port job and add reeds, squish the heads, get big carbs, etc., or you could run it stock for a while and see what changes you want to make after that.

I guess I should say any mods I can do while I have the engine out now, just basic stuff, for now. Not gonna be racing it, just want to have assurance that I can blow away most 4strokes around here!

Then you'd better go all-out. A stock H1 engine is doing well to put 50hp to the ground. From online specs, it looks like the Ninja 600 did 69hp at the rear wheel.

All out, ok. Deck heads, ports, carbs. Got it. Who in the states can do machine work for me? I can assemble engine and what do you sudjest to do specifically? Best fuel I can get round here is av100, can get other fuel but it would take a 150mile trip to get it. ;)

Find an H2 engine instead, go from there.

I didn't say deck heads, I said squish heads. You're not going for high compression, but rather a good squish band.

Yes, agreed that an H2 engine makes more sense if you're trying to keep up with modern bikes. With some good porting, big carbs, and other common sense improvements it's not terribly hard to get well into the 80 rwhp range. Optionally reeds will give it 4-stroke-like bottom end grunt.

Use the resource site to find machine shops known for doing good work on triple engines.
