I have a basket case kh400 with generator not points.
Engine starts and runs fine but I'm not getting any ac out of the 2 yellow wires going to the rectifier/regulator. I am reading 70 volts AC on the red wire from generator to CDI.

Could I tap off that for the a.c. voltage and run it to my rectifier/regulator for battery charging? My rectifier/regulator I know is good.

Because this red wire goes to the CDI, I am hoping y'all might know if this idea will work and not damage the cdi.

No, the alternator's output to the CDI unit is not suitable to use for battery charging. At running speed, it makes pulses of several hundred volts at low current. If you look at it on an oscilloscope, you'll see a lot more than 70 volts.

Are you checking the alternator output by putting your meter on the two yellow wires? I ask because if you measure them individually to ground, you should not get any reading.

I checked for voltage between the 2 yellow wires and to ground. Nothing. A friend suggested checking if the magnets are still magnets. I will do that tomorrow.

If the rotor were not magnetized, the engine would not run. The CDI is powered by two dedicated magneto coils in the alternator. If you examine the stator windings and lead wires carefully, you may find the break. It's pretty healthy sized wire, so it may be possible to repair it.

The proper diagnostic test is done with a multi meter set to ohms, check for continuity on the two yellows, if you have a reading fine,
If not the windings are open circuit and you'll have to trace the break, as Jim says.
Then check to see if you have continuity between the yellows to chassis, if there is a reading this indicates an insulation failure, if nothing then the insulation is ok.
You are looking for continuity not voltage in both tests.

Those really aren't hard to rewind. If you measure the wire diameter and buy a roll of matching magnet wire, you can wind approximately the same number of turns in the same direction and you'll have new coils. Or find a new stator on eBay. :)

Or, if you have a good scale for lighter stuff, weigh the coil pac. Then you don't have to count turns.

Used to be a guy in Alabama, Custom Rewind but I think he closed. I tried looking up the site but it appears to be gone.
I know thats no help but someone must still rewind stuff. Look up electric motor repair guys in your area maybe theres a small shop near you that will do it.
Like Jim said its not hard, just time consuming. I know a lot of GS Suzuki guys rewind there own stators, they burn up regularly, can't be much different than that.
