I pulled the rods up at TDC and tried the tap, no noise, seemed really tight

Well on my way to getting back on the road Nice fresh bores and new pistons with nicely done windows in the piston thanks to my good neighbor! So not being a machinist nor someone who has a clue, I have to follow and take advice from others and weight the options and then live with a choice I have made based on my best ability to understand what I am being told about things. Leaves a guy like me uneasy!! Once the bores where measured it was found that one of them needed to go two sizes over in order to be in perfect condition, which would bring it to 72.5mm. Now the place that I get stuff bored did say he thought it would be ok at 72mm but not what they would normally like to see and believed there would be some scratches to deep to get out completely. So I hemmed and hawed and debated and thought and looked stuff up that I can't understand, and in the end took them to Millennium Technologies which is only 50 min from me and they Nicasiled them to accept 72mm pistons. The plated cylinders should be great, Joe. When I cut slots in my pistons, I wanted to be really sure they didn't move and get damaged in the vise. |

Seems pistons are like oil changes! Cant go wrong with that set up Jim! My neighbor looked at the pistons for a while and then figured he could use some lathe bits and get them gently clamped , then he made several passes on each slot taking only a little at a time, he was afraid of damaging one with how it was clamped , turned out very nice. SO much better than my feeble attempt with the last pistons! The problem with machinists are there so freaking particular  Its fun for a guy like me to watch Hes also a very good TIG welder and has been helping me by telling my how ham fisted and lead footed I am... and said he is very interested in helping me out with a new exhaust and I need all the help I can get! |
