Post subject:  Correct dipstick?

The H2B gearbox oil dipstick I have had been butchered with the typical vise grip marks to undo it, so I bought another. But I did not know they were different from H1 to H2, but can someone clarify which is the correct one?

I'm pretty sure someone with the real answer will be along, but when I have that problem, I change the oil, put the amount in that the manual specifies, and mark the dipstick to that level.

There are three dipsticks for triples:
S series & H1B/D/E/F KH= 16115-017 - 89mm stem length - flat on stem - tapered top - http://kawatriple.com/partid/list2/16115-017.jpg
H1/A/C = 16115-001 - 87mm stem length - round stem - square top - http://kawatriple.com/partid/list2/16115-001.jpg
H2 = 16115-002 - ??? stem length - round stem - square top - http://kawatriple.com/partid/list2/16115-002.jpg
I don't have H2 stem length.

I just measured my early 1972 H2's dipstick. It has a 75 mm stem with two ring markings, and everything is round except the flat handle on the top. Then I measured my later 1972 H2's dipstick, and its stem is 87.5 mm long with two ring markings, and also all round. Then I double checked the measurements. I guess when I change the oil in my early H2, I'll do what I said and measure the amount of oil carefully and see where it comes on the stick.

When I put my two side by side, it looks just like the photo in the original post. I wonder if the short dipstick on my early '72's stick has anything to do with why I've never had to split the case halves.

Maybe the later H2 has an H1 dipstick???
All H2 used -002.
H1 had 1.2L capacity where H2 had 1.4L capacity.
Makes sense that the H2 dipstick would be shorter.... like 75mm.

The one on the left in my pic is the one that came with the bike. But my brother had a lot of H1's and only this H2B, and many of the parts I got in the 'basket' were H1, the rubber intake manifold for example, and the rear grab bar. I'll measure what I have and report back.

The stick that was installed in my H2B is 87mm long, bottom of the cast cap to the bottom of the stick itself, and is the one on the left in the pic.

The one think I know for sure now is that I'll accurately measure the oil next time I change it, and see where it comes on the stick, if it touches it at all.

Could you measure stem length on BOTH for comparison?
I would have thought the one on the RIGHT would be 87mm.

I took your pic and scaled the difference between the two you show. As inaccurate as that might be I came up with a 11.7% different stem length between them.
If you assume, as I did, that the longer one (on right) is 87mm then the shorter one would be 76.8mm long. That is pretty close to what Jim measured (75mm).

I had not known that there was a length difference and want to document it but I want it to be correct.
