I need to do some work on the rear shocks, but don't see how you get the springs off, or get the shock top off I guess. Any ideas? Thanks.

Search the resource site or do a search here.
There are several methods of taking them apart noted as I have seen many posts.
May even be a How To video as well. Pretty sure I saw one somewhere?
Springs need to be compressed and held, while you remove the pin in the shock.
Various methods show how to safely compress the shocks for disassembly.

Good Luck

These are the ones I use and they work fine.

Disassembling shocks and compressing springs is not new to me, but just did not know there was a pin. Is this in the small hole in the shock top? Is it a lock pin, punch it out then unscrew the top?

All you said was you needed to know how to get the springs off, sorry I didn't know you had done this before. You need to use a roll pin punch and punch it out.

Thanks GUTS for that link on the spring compressors.

Do you rebuild the shock itself?

Is there a replacement for them, since most are over 40 years old.

Nope, I haven't seen a replacement for the old fish oil filled shock so I just use them over. The bikes I restore most likely won't be ridden too hard so I think they will be fine.

I am going to do the same to these shocks as i did to a 2003 XR100 Honda I have, the rear shock was pogo, but did not leak etc. I drilled an 1/8" hole in a lower corner of the shock body and pumped the oil out. Then sucked mineral spirits in and out and washed it out through this hole. Then dried it out and machined a small female bung with a 6/32 screw with O ring groove, and did a tiny TIG weld to weld it to the body. Put the shock in the vise with the bung on top and a small funnel and slowly sucked new oil in, for the XR I went heavier than the typical 5wt shock oil. When full, fit the screw and O ring, and it's the best thing I ever did for the back of that bike. I'm sure it will work wonders for stock old H2 shocks too.

A lot of use get Hagons from Dave Quinn. I have 14.2" 90 lb/inch non-tapered (non-bulging) spring Hagons on mine.

Can anyone post a picture of the exact location of the roll pin that needs to be removed?

Thanks
