 Post subject: Removing gas tank sealer

I have a tank from a TC Turbo that I was going to de-rust for my pal Leroy. It has been coated with some kind of tank sealer. It is degrading badly. What do I use to loosen it up or dissolve it away?

I've been down this road before.
The soft stuff like Creme is horrible as it can come out in small soft pieces.
I've tried MEK, lacquer thinner, Acetone, etc.
It often comes down to using something sharp and abrasive like drywall screws and a piece of chain (the kind with the bent pieces that are sharp).
Tons of shaking and flushing.

As far as resealing:
I had a tank that had a lot of rust.
Used Evaporust and the above items to get all the loose material off.
I then coated with Caswell.
I think the stuff works OK and is clear although it was barely enough for a 5 gallon tank.
It looks like epoxy and dries clear and hard.
The remnants of the mixed material is now covering a small hole in the concrete garage floor and is incredibly tough.
A restoration guy recommended Bill Hirsch tank sealer.
Not sure who it's made by but apparently car restorers prefer it.
I asked them if I could put it over top of the Caswell material and they said it was originally intended to be used against rusty steel and could not recommend it over any other type of sealer.

The Caswell stuff is Phenolic Epoxy, which is resistant to everything in today's gasoline, and is used to line big commercial fuel storage tanks. I believe you can buy the stuff generically cheaper than Caswell sells it. Someone here has done that.

I've done the MEK, drywall screws in the tank in the dryer, then removed remaining rust with electrolysis. Worked well, just took some time.

Thanks guys. I'm not having problems with rust, I de-rust lot's of tanks and I have not found anything better than Evaporust. I just need to remove the remaining sealer. I'm thinking hardware and rotation will be the answer.
