I re-painted the clutch perch but I didn't remove the paint from the area that contacts the handle bars, I will do that. All of the lights, brake lights, dash lights, high and low beams and the blinkers all work fine so shouldn't the horn switch be grounded too? |

Horn button -> housing -> handlebar -> clutch perch -> lever bolt -> lever -> cable -> actuator -> clutch pushrod (plastic splines would not conduct) -> internal engine parts -> engine case -> motor mount (ground strap on rubber mounted S3) -> frame ground. What a crazy ride! Not trying to stir things up, but except for the fact that all those parts are already there, would a couple feet of wire have raised the cost a dime?

The horn is the ONLY item in the electrical system that requires a ground thru the handlebar. For the horn to work the clutch cable must be attached, there must be metal to metal contact between the clutch perch and handlebar, there must be metal to metal contact with the LH control case and handlebar. It makes no difference whether lights, signals or anything else works! The battery provides 12v to the horn thru the ignition switch and the horn switch completes the circuit to ground via handlebar, as described. I don't know how to make it any clearer. If you hook a jumper wire from frame to black wire on horn and it sounds... then the ground is missing from the handlebar. attach the jumper from ground to the handlebar and push the horn button and if it sounds you know the handlebar is missing a ground connection. If it doesn't sound with a jumper to the handlebar the button switch is bad or the LH case isn't making metal contact with handlebar. |

A very simple test will reveal whether or not your handlebars are grounded. Run a test light from the battery + terminal and touch end of test light to the bars... If not lighting the light, its time to clean paint here and there. Of course that IS with clutch cable attached. |
