In the olden days I used Dexron.
And, the transmission always looked good every time I took it apart.
I change the oil in my stuff often because it's cheap insurance.

We stock so many different kinds of tranny fluid here at the shop it would warp your mind, and we don't buy Dexron ( or Type F )
We have Blue Mercedes stuff, we have clear Pentosin that we use in a variety of fine European cars.
We have this stuff for dual clutch trannys and use it in Audi's and Porche's.
I pay less for it than "golden spectro" retail stuff.

Related, but off track...do you think Honda's ATF is any different from, say, Dexron11, or whatever.... or is it marketing and Labels??

Here's the FAQ page, which talks about transmission oil and some other things:

I've done a bunch of work on severely damaged transmissions that people used ATF in, not good, and, "moly" ( molybdenum disulphide) is not good for our clutch friction plates. ATF is too light, isn't a good lubricant, it is a hydraulic pressure fluid.

For me, natural 85W-90 gear oil (NO synthetic), and no moly additives works best, always has.

Yep like Tuner says.
I use nothing but Lucas 80/90 in all my 2 stroke transmissions and have never had a lubricant related failure or lubricant related clutch slip issue and I have been known to run mine pretty hard on occasion....

Look, I agree with Tuner, and the modern concensus, I DO! I did, however, run my first H2 for many years, on the track and off, using Trans fluid, and never had the faintest clutch or gearbox issues. That was what the Book said at the time; now, I know times have moved on, and maybe the book was wrong, but that doesn't alter the fact that many of us used ATF without problems. It is just an observation! (don't bother telling me I did the wrong thing, and I should know better....!) :|

Back when our bikes were new, "the manuals" had a bunch of stuff in it that we revised along the way fairly quickly. Trans lubes and fork oil are two we revised rather quickly as far as ATF was concerned. We simply found the engine and gear lubes lasted longer, and worked seriously better than the ATF's. Part of the first trans and front fork oil recommendations were simple four stroke natural engine oils. I still use those same straight weight natural four stroke engine oils in all my front forks, still works great, every time.

Everyone has their own preferences, if you have no problems with, and, are happy using what you use, stay with it.

It's amazing all the specialty fluids cars take these days.
And we mainly do European stuff.
Just Mercedes must have 5 different types of ATF
I will say that the 001 989 78 03 stuff for the .9 tranny's is a pretty shade of blue - green
